A few months ago our Practice Manager Muriel asked if she could take a month off work to realise a dream she has had for many years. She went to work as a volunteer at an orphanage in Sri Lanka. She helped look after 54 children ranging in age from 5 to 19 years of age with mild to serious learning difficulties. She took with her a suitcase full of dental sundries and taught them how to brush, floss and generally look after their teeth properly. The difference in that month was tremendous.

Muriel heard about a child of 12 with severe physical and mental disabilities who lived two hours away in the jungle and who had very bad gum disease. Within two days she had been to the local hospital and organized for him to have 10 extractions done. She managed to get a driver and together they picked him up, drove him to the hospital and went back two days later to pick him up and take him back to his ‘shack’. The consultant called her thanking her for caring so much for the children in Sri Lanka.
She found the whole experience life changing and hopes to go back again next year. More recently she has been involved in the Nicholas Foundation who sponsors the orphanage she visited and is running a fund raising event for the children.
Muriel is a true inspiration and we are delighted that she has been recognised by The Private Dentistry Awards 2009. At their annual awards ceremony in December she was awarded their Outstanding Achievement award.
